Evening's Dream - SSA - Melody by Turlough O’Carolan, a 17th century Irish composer, is harmonized and arranged for SSA with original lyrics by Peggy Carter. The atypical harmonization in this setting produces a transparent quality that transcends time and reality. The long legato phrasing helps develop breath control and the harmonic shifting of the key-center makes the arrangement interesting and challenging.

Difficulty: Challenging

Let Him Go - SA - Traditional Irish Song arranged for SA using a combination of block harmony and countermelody. The lyrics dramatize the old story of a love gone wrong, in which directors might use their own creativity to “stage” the performance, as well as take advantage of this opportunity to teach phrasing and diction. The contrasting dynamics, tempo changes and variety in phrasing make this arrangement an interesting challenge.

Love, Will You Come - A medley of two Gaelic songs, harmonized, paraphrased and arranged for Unison treble voices, or solo. The text includes phrases in old Gaelic language with pronunciation guide. The limited range makes it attainable by inexperienced voices, and the tonality and phrasing give expression to deep, mature emotion.

Difficulty: Not difficult (the minor tonality may be somewhat challenging)

(if ordered for solo use, permission for 5 copies is $14.95)

Morning - Traditional Welsh tune arranged for two parts plus descant for recorder or flute and chords for autoharp or guitar. A good choice for Boys ensemble or Mixed Treble, it is written with limited range for inexperienced voices. The alto part is appropriate for boys changing voices, and the melody actually moves back and forth to both parts while the other part sings harmony or a sustained drone.

Difficulty: Less difficult

Turn Not Away - CB - Old Gaelic melody arranged for 2-part boys ensemble for Cambiata and Bass-Baritone (boys changing voices and boys changed voices). The range and style is appropriate for inexperienced voices, yet the piano accompaniment adds depth and character to produce a sophisticated arrangement that enables older students to give expression to deep feelings.

Difficulty: Moderate

Turn Not Away.Unison - Old Gaelic melody arranged for unison treble voices. The limited range makes it appropriate for inexperienced voices, and it’s abbreviated in length will appeal to singers with less endurance and shorter attention-span.... yet the piano accompaniment adds interest and sophistication.

Difficulty: Less difficult

Shenandoah - SA - A medley of two American folk songs arranged for SA, using statement and echo to allow the melody to move gently from one part to the other. The range is limited, for inexperienced voices and the piano part is simple, yet interesting.

This arrangement gives the students an excellent opportunity to use their sight reading skills, therefore a bonus of this selection is that you will receive (for no extra charge) a version without lyrics to make it more useful for the exercise of sight reading.
